Season Opener Staples! Create Custom Baseball Patches For The Team!
Baseball patches are an integral part of the game. They're ideal for any level, from tee-ball to the Major Leagues!
With spring nearly here, baseball diamonds and parks around the country will soon start filling up. Millions of people can’t wait for the start of the Great American Pastime every year.
Baseball patches are an essential part of the game. You see them on every team uniform, from tee-ball to the big leagues, offering a bit of personality and character for each squad. And spring is the perfect time to create custom baseball patches for your team.
Benefits of Baseball Patches
Custom baseball patches have been an integral part of baseball uniforms from almost the very beginning of the game. They add color and visual interest to the uniforms.
Of course we're all familiar with embroidered baseball patches from seeing them on our favorite team's uniforms. The patches add style and flair to the uniform and are an excellent way to stand out on the diamond.
Baseball patches say a lot about the team. Every team has its own logo, branding and values. Custom patches reflect the team culture.
Patches Aren’t Just for Uniforms
Baseball patches aren’t limited to uniforms. You can add them to virtually any garment. They’re an excellent way for fans to show support for their favorite teams.
If you want to show off your dedication and team loyalty, add your team's patch to a hat, a shirt, a pair of pants, or even socks (Red ones in Boston, White ones in Chicago, or any other color of your choice.)
Commemorative Patches
Teams have found that custom baseball patches are an excellent way to commemorate a player or a coach. Many teams create their own patches to wear to honor someone special to the team. Others use patches to celebrate special occasions.
Major League Baseball often uses patches for commemorative events. In June, for example, MLB introduced custom patches for Lou Gehrig Day, the day set aside to honor and remember the New York Yankees great who died of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. The patches featured Gehrig’s uniform number – 4 – designed in Yankee uniform colors and font.
This year, MLB also had patches made commemorating the 85th anniversary of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Players for all 30 teams wore them on their caps for the Hall of Fame induction ceremony weekend on July 20th and 21st.
“As the Class of 2024 is honored in Cooperstown and the Museum celebrates its 85th birthday, it is fitting that the legends of tomorrow will be a part of history today with this first of its kind cap,” Josh Rawitch, President of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum said before the event.
The Baseball Hall of Fame’s logo features a white baseball with red stitching on a field of red and white horizontal stripes with a single row of white stars on a blue bar above, and the museum’s name included.
Red Stockings Before Red Sox
In 2019, all 30 teams wore custom “MLB 150” patches for the entire season. It was to honor the 1869 Cincinnati Red Stockings (today, the Cincinnati Reds), the first openly all-salaried professional baseball team.
Commemorative patches also can be a way to thank fans and supporters at any level. They’re an excellent promo item for minor league and youth league games. How about patch night at the ball park? Give a patch to every fan in attendance as a way to say thanks and give them another way to show their support as well. It’s a terrific way to build fan loyalty and show appreciation to them.
Rally patches are also a fun way to share team spirit. Custom patches that feature team names, mascots, and logos are an ideal way to build camaraderie while giving back to the fans. Hand out rally patches before games, or even at the seventh-inning stretch, as a way to bring the fans and players together.
World Series Patches
In 1987, Major League Baseball introduced custom patches commemorating the World Series. Players for the National League’s St. Louis Cardinals wore the small patches on their right sleeves, becoming the first team to do so. Their opponents, the American League’s Minnesota Twins (the eventual Series winners) chose not to. The patches have since become a league-wide annual tradition.
Those original World Series patches made MLB the first major sports league to promote its marquee event of the year on player uniforms. Within a decade, the National Hockey League, the National Basketball Association and the National Football League all followed suit.
Memorial Patches
From the early days of the sport, teams have worn custom patches as memorials for lost players, coaches or officials.
In 1876 for example, the St. Louis Browns (later to become the Cardinals) wore memorial armbands for a month to honor Tom Miller, a player who died of kidney disease.
Other teams have worn memorial patches over the years, to honor players, managers, owners and team broadcasters. In 2009, the Philadelphia Phillies wore a black circle patch with the letters “HK,” a tribute to the squad's long-time sportscaster, Harry Kalas, who died that spring.
This past June, San Francisco Giants players wore custom patches with the name and iconic 24 of legendary center fielder Willie Mays, who died June 18.
