When designing a custom patch, there are a few things to take into consideration. Of course, the most important aspect of any good patch is the design itself. Whether you are using graphics, icons, symbols, logos, or text, you want elements that stand out and says something.

Another important aspect to creating embroidered patches is the percentage of embroidery coverage. Choosing the right embroidery coverage can play a big role in the look of your patch and how the finished product looks.

What is embroidery coverage? How do you figure out what embroidery coverage is best? Does it make a difference? We will break down the basics of embroidery coverage below.

Embroidered Patch Basics

Producing an embroidered patch requires two basic materials: twill and embroidery thread. The combination of these two materials form the embroidery coverage and percentage. The twill backing is the base for your creation. The thread embroidered through the twill creates your design.

Embroidery coverage defines the percentage of the patch covered by stitches. This is an important detail for any patch, that can affect the look of the patch and the cost.

Embroidery Percentages and You!

There are three types of embroidered patches offered, 50%, 75%,  and 100% embroidery. But what's the difference between the three? Let’s compare.

On a 50% embroidered patch, the embroidery covers 50% or less of the twill’s surface area. This is great for simple designs such as name patches. Since there is plenty of open space, these patches should be simple, classic, and clean. Keep in mind that half the twill background will show, so be sure to choose a complementary twill color to your thread colors.

With a 75% embroidered patch, you guessed it, about three quarters of the patch is covered with embroidery. This allows for larger elements and centered embroidery elements. The visible contrast between the embroidered design and the twill makes for a striking appeal that is great for several applications.

Last but not least is 100% embroidered patches. The embroidered design covers the entire surface of the twill, leaving none of the backing exposed. This gives you maximum room on your patch for intricate design elements. This style is ideal for complex artwork that requires multiple colors. The stitching depth and high thread count offer outstanding attention to detail.

If you’re not sure which embroidery percentage is right for your design, ask your patch provider. They’re experts in creating custom embroidered patches, and they can advise you which will look best for your patch design.
